On to France!

after Ypres we headed south and crossed the border into France. We were a bit discombobulated because we had nomaps or info about this part of France and we ended up sleeping at an escargot farm!  We actually set our tent up in a greenhouse because it was pouring outside!  Farmer Fabien was very kind to us and explained all kinds of interesting facts about escargot. He then offered us some and I must admit I tried them!  My first ‘meat’ in years!

After that we headed to Lille a bigger city in French Flanders. It was again pouring so we broke down and stayed at our first hotel since Amsterdam!  It was called Hotel Continental and they were great there–they kept the tandem bike in their lobby for us. We had a room overlooking the train station and a colourful fountain. A real European experience!

After Lille we headed on to Vimy Ridge to see the Canadian monument there. The ridge is quite high, our first significant hill on the trip!  The monument is stunning.

Jasper and I found the names of some Heffernans who had died during the war but their bodies were never found. Their names are on the Monument. We also did a tour of the tunnels at Vimy.

You can see in the picture where the messengers slept and where a soldier carved his name into the wall.
